SUMMARY:Community Orchard Working Bee - Sat 7th June 2025\, 2-4pm
DESCRIPTION:Interested in joining a keen local bunch of gardening enthusiasts?  Come and join Friends of the Farm’s next orchard working bee on Saturday 5th April  2-4pm. \nJobs to do will include digging a trench into which to plant our collected peach pits so that we can grow rootstock onto which to attach our grafted trees as well as general maintenance as we head into winter. \nThis forms part of our plan towards helping Mangere Bridge to become more food resilient; feeding our community well into the future from plants which have proven over time to grow well in our place. The reduction in waste from packaging and carbon emissions from air miles\, when you just have to walk down the road for a feed\, is an added bonus! \nGood company plus home-made baked goodies and tea/coffee will be your reward.  Look out for the Friends of the Farm flag on the side of the road near 82 Wallace Rd\, Mangere Bridge

SUMMARY:2025 Mangroves Seedling Removal Finale POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED – NEW DATE COMING\nSorry\, we got our tides wrong – stand by for a new date/time.\nJoin us on the foreshore for mangrove seedling removals (60cm and smaller). This work is undertaken to protect the ecology of the foreshore for the wide variety of birds who are in the area. The exposed lava flows are a safe roosting area for them and the mudflats provide an accessible feeding ground. Come along and assist with sustaining the habitat for the birds of Mangere Bridge. Wear old clothes\, sturdy shoes like old sneakers\, reef shoes or boat shoes. Bring your own gardening gloves and a bucket if you have them. See you there! \nOur last Mangrove Removal Day for 2025 is on Sunday 15th June\, 1 – 3 pm. Meet at the Māngere Boating Club @ 32 Kiwi Esplanade\, Māngere Bridge\, Auckland 2022. Also\, we know that people individually remove seedlings\, and some of you have already made a very dedicated effort. We would love to know who those people are so that we can help support their wonderful efforts. Please contact us. \n\nKiwi Esplanade and Mangroves- Update for Residents 2025 \nKia ora neighbours\, \n\n\n\nIt’s Friends of the Farm with an update on mangroves. As you would have noticed it has been another bumper year for mangroves and there are thousands of seedlings along the length of the Esplanade. For those of you who are new to the area\, our community has helped to manage the mangrove growth on the Esplanade for many years. \n\n\n\nThe focus of this work has always been first and foremost the ecology of the area. \n\n\n\nWe know opinions are divided on mangroves and we don’t claim to be experts on them. Mangroves have a place and many advantages in the eco system. Yet if these mangroves are left to colonise\, the ecosystem of the Esplanade will change. The birds will move further onto the shore as their current safe roosts on the exposed lava flows will be covered in mangroves. This will also mean that the mud flats in which they find their food will be further away into the harbour and covered by tide. The birds are already affected by recreational activities along the Esplanade which\, at times\, significantly hinder their ability to roost on the large grassy patches\, and this will only increase if the birds no longer have the lava mud flats available for roosting. \n\n\n\nFor more than ten years\, we have seen that keeping most of the Esplanade free of mangroves has continued to enable our wonderful sea birds to forage at low tide and roost on the exposed lava flows. \n\n\n\nRemoving the seedlings takes a concerted community effort. It’s tough work. They need to be hand pulled and be under 60cms high and they cannot be removed from under established mangrove areas. We all enjoy the beauty of the area. \n\n\n\nWe know that people individually remove seedlings\, and some of you have already made a very dedicated effort. We would love to know who those people are so that we can help support their wonderful efforts. Please contact us. \n\n\n\nWe would like to hear from you and understand where locals sit on this issue. Please feel free to contact us. \n\n\n\nNgā mihi nui Janine Nillesen Co- Chair\, Friends of the Farm friends@fof.nz www.aboutmangerebridge.nz April 2025 \n\n\n\nFriends of the Farm is a local group focused on reducing waste and protecting the environment and has partnered with Auckland Council for more than ten years to deliver education and waste reduction services. \n
