SUMMARY:Community Orchard Working Bee - Sat 7th June 2025\, 2-4pm
DESCRIPTION:Interested in joining a keen local bunch of gardening enthusiasts?  Come and join Friends of the Farm’s next orchard working bee on Saturday 5th April  2-4pm. \nJobs to do will include digging a trench into which to plant our collected peach pits so that we can grow rootstock onto which to attach our grafted trees as well as general maintenance as we head into winter. \nThis forms part of our plan towards helping Mangere Bridge to become more food resilient; feeding our community well into the future from plants which have proven over time to grow well in our place. The reduction in waste from packaging and carbon emissions from air miles\, when you just have to walk down the road for a feed\, is an added bonus! \nGood company plus home-made baked goodies and tea/coffee will be your reward.  Look out for the Friends of the Farm flag on the side of the road near 82 Wallace Rd\, Mangere Bridge

SUMMARY:Community Orchard Working Bee - Sat 24 Aug 2-4pm
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A RESCHEDULE OF THE 17th AUGUST EVENT THAT WAS POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER \nWe’d love you to help with the never-ending task of mulching our new food forest. Good company plus home-made baked goodies and tea/coffee will be your reward. \nLook out for the Friends of the Farm flag on the side of the road near 82 Wallace Rd\, Mangere Bridge. \nCheck out our heritage food forest videos on our FB page\, or contact us for more information. \nBackground information: \nThis is the next step in developing our young food forest. We’re hoping to involve the community in creating a pocket planting of food trees which are successful in our unique area. \nThis heritage tree project began in 2020 but was held back by lockdowns. However\, we’re now on track\, with more land\, and expert pruning guidance from Brian\, grafting skills from Richard and community aspirations from Laurence. \nIf you have an old but fruitful stone fruit tree (peach\, plum\, apricot\, nectarine) which is successful despite you ignoring it\, and are interested in learning more about our project\, please get in touch so that we can plan next steps. The aim is to take scions and graft from these trees to grow exact replicas in our food forest. \nWe’re taking steps towards helping Mangere Bridge to become more food resilient; feeding our community well into the future from plants which have proven over time to grow well in our place. The reduction in waste from packaging and carbon emissions from air miles\, when you just have to walk down the road for a feed\, is an added bonus!

SUMMARY:Māngere Bridge Community Orchard Working Bee
DESCRIPTION:It’s late summer and we will be running a pruning workshop and working bee. \nBrian will share his pruning skills with anyone wanting to learn\, bring your sharp secateurs\, or pruning saws. \nOtherwise we will be mulching and having a general tidy up. \n\nCome along and celebrate as we visit our Orchard and growing Food Forest right next door and give the bigger trees some TLC. \nTucked away in a quiet corner of Ambury Farm off Wallace Rd\, the orchard has been home to a grove of feijoa trees for many years and continues to be cared for and extended by community volunteers to include a wide range of other fruit trees for all to enjoy. \nWork often includes the following; \n\nCollecting sheep poo from sheep yards at farm\, filling bags and bringing to orchard\nFilling planter boxes with soil and sheep poo so we can plant peach stones at the right time.\nMulching and spreading sheep poo around fruit trees\nClearing kikuyu and weeds – around fruit trees and also around circular bed on food forest side\nHarvesting feijoas and other yummy stuff\nTidying/thinning harakeke\n\nFriends of the Farm run regular working bees at the orchard\, helping you connect with this wonderful resource. \nWear sturdy footwear and gloves are a good idea. \nHope to see you all there.
