SUMMARY:Community Orchard t-Budding Workshop - Sat 28th Feb\, 2-4pm
DESCRIPTION:As part of Friends of the Farm’s long-term plan to replicate prolific fruiting trees in our area\, we’re running a new workshop to discover a different way of propagating new plants from old. \nBring with you a cutting or two from the peach\, plum or apricot tree that has been giving you fruit for years in Māngere Bridge. \nRichard will teach us how to take just a bud from that twig and attach it to an existing plant.  Over the next couple of years\, you can watch your fruit grow from a different tree. \nSound interesting?  Come along and join us for this free workshop. \nAfternoon tea and home baked goodies will be available at the end to celebrate a successful session. \nThe orchard is located behind 82 Wallace Road\, Mangere Bridge. Look for the FoF flag

SUMMARY:Māngere Bridge Community Orchard Working Bee
DESCRIPTION:THIS MONTH (September 6th 2025) \nIf you’ve been thinking of starting a composting system but don’t quite know how\, come to our free workshop. \nAt our last orchard working bee\, we emptied our very untidy compost bins.  This time\, we have Hari from the Compost Collective coming to run a workshop on how to get the best results from your compost bin.  He’ll answer your composting conundrums: what to put in it\, how much\, what we mean by green and brown layers\, how long before the compost is ready to use on the garden\, among others.  And if you’re interested in bokashi or worm farms\, Hari’s your man to ask. \nThe workshop is free and all confirmed composting workshop attendees will receive a 50% off coupon to use towards the composting system of your choice (Bokashi\, worm farm\, or traditional compost bin). \n  \nInterested in joining a keen local bunch of gardening enthusiasts?  Come and join Friends of the Farm’s next orchard working bee on the first Saturday of every month from 2-4pm. \nThis forms part of our plan towards helping Māngere Bridge to become more food resilient; feeding our community well into the future from plants which have proven over time to grow well in our place. The reduction in waste from packaging and carbon emissions from air miles\, when you just have to walk down the road for a feed\, is an added bonus! \nGood company plus home-made baked goodies and tea/coffee will be your reward.  Look out for the Friends of the Farm flag on the side of the road near 82 Wallace Rd\, Mangere Bridge

SUMMARY:Community Orchard Working Bee - Sat 24 Aug 2-4pm
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A RESCHEDULE OF THE 17th AUGUST EVENT THAT WAS POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER \nWe’d love you to help with the never-ending task of mulching our new food forest. Good company plus home-made baked goodies and tea/coffee will be your reward. \nLook out for the Friends of the Farm flag on the side of the road near 82 Wallace Rd\, Mangere Bridge. \nCheck out our heritage food forest videos on our FB page\, or contact us for more information. \nBackground information: \nThis is the next step in developing our young food forest. We’re hoping to involve the community in creating a pocket planting of food trees which are successful in our unique area. \nThis heritage tree project began in 2020 but was held back by lockdowns. However\, we’re now on track\, with more land\, and expert pruning guidance from Brian\, grafting skills from Richard and community aspirations from Laurence. \nIf you have an old but fruitful stone fruit tree (peach\, plum\, apricot\, nectarine) which is successful despite you ignoring it\, and are interested in learning more about our project\, please get in touch so that we can plan next steps. The aim is to take scions and graft from these trees to grow exact replicas in our food forest. \nWe’re taking steps towards helping Mangere Bridge to become more food resilient; feeding our community well into the future from plants which have proven over time to grow well in our place. The reduction in waste from packaging and carbon emissions from air miles\, when you just have to walk down the road for a feed\, is an added bonus!
