SUMMARY:Community Orchard Working Bee - Sat 24 Aug 2-4pm
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A RESCHEDULE OF THE 17th AUGUST EVENT THAT WAS POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER \nWe’d love you to help with the never-ending task of mulching our new food forest. Good company plus home-made baked goodies and tea/coffee will be your reward. \nLook out for the Friends of the Farm flag on the side of the road near 82 Wallace Rd\, Mangere Bridge. \nCheck out our heritage food forest videos on our FB page\, or contact us for more information. \nBackground information: \nThis is the next step in developing our young food forest. We’re hoping to involve the community in creating a pocket planting of food trees which are successful in our unique area. \nThis heritage tree project began in 2020 but was held back by lockdowns. However\, we’re now on track\, with more land\, and expert pruning guidance from Brian\, grafting skills from Richard and community aspirations from Laurence. \nIf you have an old but fruitful stone fruit tree (peach\, plum\, apricot\, nectarine) which is successful despite you ignoring it\, and are interested in learning more about our project\, please get in touch so that we can plan next steps. The aim is to take scions and graft from these trees to grow exact replicas in our food forest. \nWe’re taking steps towards helping Mangere Bridge to become more food resilient; feeding our community well into the future from plants which have proven over time to grow well in our place. The reduction in waste from packaging and carbon emissions from air miles\, when you just have to walk down the road for a feed\, is an added bonus!
