Green Thumbs at Māngere Bridge Community Orchard Working Bee

Fine weather brought a good turnout (we could always do with more of you!) for the Friends of the Farm Working Bee at the Māngere Bridge Community Orchard this November.

Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to care for the orchard, starting with spreading mulch around the thriving blueberry bushes and carefully weeding around the harakeke to keep the area tidy and healthy.

A major task of the day was transplanting young peach seedlings, giving them more space to grow strong and ready for the upcoming T-bud grafting workshop in February. To help the seedlings adjust, volunteers added shade cloth to protect them from transplant shock, overheating, and moisture loss.

The day was filled with teamwork, laughter, and a shared sense of purpose – another great example of the community coming together to nurture a sustainable local food source. Many thanks to everyone who joined in and made the day such a success!

Keep an eye out for workshops throughout the year: composting, grafting, pruning.  We will also consider requests for topics for workshops.
