Tonnes of eWaste Collected – Māngere Bridge eWaste Day 2024

Nearly five and a half tonnes of e-waste was collected on Sat 6 April at Friends of the Farm’s latest recycling initiative.  Partnering with Computer Recycling, which provided the skip and the manpower (and the recycling factory), and Ambury Park Centre, which provided the fantastic venue, Friends of the Farm was thrilled to see more than 400 cars pass through.

Friends of the Farm sponsored the event so that participants were able to get rid of their e-waste for free.  A huge variety of items was collected, including obsolete and broken appliances and computers, piles of tangled cables, old phones, record players, laptops, heaters, fridges, washing machines, microwaves.  Anything with a cord was accepted and sorted for transport back to Computer Recycling’s large Penrose depot.  Members of Friends of the Farm had visited this location last year and seen for themselves that Computer Recycling works in a sustainable, transparent, secure and accessible way to repurpose or recycle electronics. Their mission is to extract value at any point of the technology lifecycle journey, unlocking its potential as a source of sustainable materials. This may be through repurposing IT assets in the early stages of their life or extracting valuable material & resources from electronics that may be otherwise destined for landfill.  Both Friends of the Farm and Computer Recycling were pleased to work together to allow locals to clear out their garages and houses and free up space, while ensuring that these obsolete, broken or unwanted items were disposed of responsibly. 

Friends of the Farm (FOF) member Marie organized the day and kept the flow of cars moving through.  She commented, “People are pleased to have this event in their hood.  Several walked or cycled to drop off their small items, while others entirely filled their car.  Over three tonnes of the material collected came from steel and mixed appliances.

“Some locals had never visited the riding centre before and were delighted to learn more about Ambury Park Centre’s wonderful work, plus say hello to the horses as they left.  I was surprised at the distance some people drove to recycle their e-waste –  some came here from Westgate, the North shore, Kohimarama, Panmure, even as far away as Pokeno and everywhere in between.”’”

Friends of the Farm co-chair, Jane, said, “This was a trial event for Friends of the Farm.  The success of the day suggests it might have to become a regular feature.”
