Summer planting tips from Whenua Warrior

Summer planting tips from Whenua Warrior

, , ,

Kelly from Whenua Warrior says, “Anything you want to eat in two to three months’ time should be planted today!”

Think fruits like blueberries, strawberries and melons; vegetables like capsicums, tomatoes, spring onions, and lettuce; and herbs like basil and thyme.

When the pōhutukawa blooms, the land is telling us summer is here. And when it’s summer on land, its partner the ocean knows, and the kina are fat and ready to eat.

Plant now to continue the feast throughout the year!

January, February and March are our true summer months when the garden flourishes. Keep your plants well-watered and use mulch to conserve water.

And what are the indicators for summer?

When the pōhutukawa blooms, the land is telling us summer is here. And when it’s summer on land, its partner the ocean knows, and the kina are fat and ready to eat.

Happy summer!

About Whenua Warrior

Whenua Warrior was founded in 2017 by local Kelly Francis.

While working at her corporate job, Kelly realised that our food systems needed to change in order to address food insecurity and promote food sovereignty in Aotearoa.

Soon after, she made it her mission to grow an edible garden accessible to every New Zealander. In doing so, Kelly dreamt that she could help feed the community, teach the community to feed themselves, and empower them to feed each other.

With the support of friends who shared her vision, Kelly established the Whenua Warrior Charitable Trust in early 2018.

Since then, Whenua Warrior has worked on hundreds of projects across Aotearoa.
