On 20 September 2026 millions of people all across the world united to clean up litter and waste from their beaches, parks, rivers and streets.
World Cleanup Day was celebrated in Māngere Bridge with a Litter Cleanup, organised by local group Friends of the Farm (FOF).
Locals converged on Digby’s Patch in Wallace Road Māngere Bridge with bags of litter they had collected from their street and park. The FOF crew were ready to sort it in to recyclables and landfill. There was a full ute load of rubbish and a recycling bin full of clean recycling.
After a quick hand wash everyone was offered their reward of an icecream or iceblock, and some fresh fruit. A great range of Māngere Bridge streets were cleaned up, from the Bridge to the horse paddocks, plus the maunga. The children were from a variety of schools, including Waterlea, Cornwall Primary, Royal Oak and Michael Park.
It was gratifying to see how enthusiastically the youngsters embraced the cleanup and their amazement at the variety of rubbish they collected. Polystyrene, hinges, nails, car parts, odd shoes, socks, t shirts, drink cans, glass and plastic bottles, and cardboard.
And the final word from the children? ‘Put your rubbish in the bin!’
