Māngere Bridge – It’s a Hive of Wastewise Activity!

Friends of the Farm members have been busy bees this month, buzzing around, running 3 different working bees.   An orchard working bee, a mangrove working bee and a sewing bee! Something for everyone.  And all of them focused on caring about the whenua.

The orchard working bee was focused on preparing our fruit trees for winter, deciding on where to grow our rootstock for our heritage tree cuttings and harvesting goodies from the garden.

The mangrove working bee removed mangrove seedlings to keep our bays free for roosting birds.

The sewing bee brought together keen sewing whizzes of all ages to use donated fabric off cuts to make vegetable bags, fabric food covers and “handy”* fabric bags.

creating a caring, connected wastewise community

All three of these working bees brought together more than 75 locals to work together for the community and the environment.  Friends of the Farm’s slogan is ‘creating a caring, connected wastewise community‘.  These three events tick all the boxes!

And what is a “handy”* fabric bag used for?  You decide!  We’ve found them useful for keeping precious items fresh and dust free – like a teddy, evening bags, and a heirloom crocheted shawl. Mostly we use them instead of wrapping paper,  for birthday and Christmas presents.

Lots more to come this month and next month, with two more Mangrove Working Bees on Sunday 18th and Saturday 31st May,  plus Friends of the Farm will be at the Ambury Regional Park tree planting days on Sunday 18th and Saturday 24th May, providing a tasty BBQ sausage afterwards for the planters.  The next Orchard Working Bee is on Saturday 7 June 2-4pm and the next Sewing Bee is scheduled for Saturday 14 June 2-4pm.
