Recently Mangere Bridge Library held a special event to celebrate the first Papua New Guinea (PNG) Pidgin Language week. PNG is the most linguistically diverse country in the world and Pidgin is a commonly used dialect.
Irene Tufuga, Pasifica Librarian, organized the event with the help of library staff from local libraries. The event was attended by people from many groups, including from PNG, Tonga, local kura and schools and Mangere Bridge locals.
The PNG National Anthem was sung, followed by an opening prayer. Irene welcomed everyone using PNG Pidgin which was much appreciated by the PNG community. Mangere-Otahuhu Local Board member Papaliitele Lafulafu Peo addressed the group and spoke about the cultural richness of the local community and how important these events were, to acknowledge culture and celebrate our connections.
After a performance by a PNG group, the Poimaino Homebase Group and a Tongan group, refreshments were provided which gave people a chance to mingle and chat. Local Yvonne said “I enjoyed this opportunity to learn more about the PNG culture and community here in Auckland. With over 200 dialects and 800 languages in PNG, I can understand the importance of finding a common dialect like Pidgin”.
