Kia ora koutou,

Thank you all for coming along to our Māngere Kayak Day on Saturday 5th March 2022.

We had an awesome turn out of 97 people that we took exploring the Manukau Harbour via kayak. With the help of our awesome local guides Zane and Layna from Friends of the Farm we were able to show off the harbour from a different perspective and learn about the history and ecology of the rohe (area).

Whilst participants were waiting to go kayaking we had Whitebait Connection- Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust showing off some local freshwater biodiversity and Friends of the Farm promoting waste minimisation in the local community.

PARA KORE KI TĀMAKI also ran a raranga workshop alongside the kayak rotations so that people could learn how to prepare harakeke and learn simple weaving techniques to help them make their own creations at home.

Auckland Sea Kayaks was on hand to keep everyone safe and sound on the water, whilst giving some great kayaking instruction.

Kotare (kingfisher), matuku moana (white-faced heron) and tōrea (oystercatchers) were spotted on the water whilst exploring the mangroves, shelly beaches and tidal mudflats.

A massive thank you to our awesome event funders Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board, Auckland Unlimited and The Bobby Stafford-Bush Foundation as well as our amazing volunteers and event partners Friends of the Farm, Auckland Sea Kayaks, PARA KORE KI TĀMAKI and Whitebait Connection- Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust

Thank you to the awesome team at Experiencing Marine Reserves
