Māngere Bridge – A Busy and Rewarding October

Māngere Bridge – A Busy and Rewarding October

Friends of the Farm Māngere Bridge (FOF) have been busy with a variety of events in May.

Firstly, they hosted three sausage sizzles for the industrious planters who turned out in force at the Ambury Farm plantings.  This year, the planting consisted of grasses and sedges, rather than trees and shrubs, to restore the farmland near the foreshore to its original state as a wetland.  Many community groups enjoyed working together on the planting,  and bringing their children to encourage them to care for the environment.  Fatima, Radiah and Nassa were there with their friends.  “We enjoy making a difference to the environment and contributing to the community”, said Fatima.

The FOF volunteers cooked up over 500 sausages over the three planting days for the hungry planters.

Over the last few weeks there have been three Mangrove Working Bees, where volunteers remove mangrove seedlings to keep the low tide area free so that wading birds can forage.

It’s a messy and muddy job but it has immediate benefits.  At the last working bee, a young local had a great time helping out with his surfboard, getting to the hard-to-reach places.

In addition to these two events that directly affect the local environment, FOF supported the local group Bridge Connect’s Information Evenings for new residents by providing home-baked cookies for supper. Over four weeks, a wide range of topics was covered, from the history of mana whenua, St James Church, market gardens, butter factory, godwits,  to the 30-plus local groups and clubs. New local Jennie commented, “The Bridge Connect evenings were well worth attending. The speakers provided many fascinating insights into the histories and cultures of Mangere Bridge, from several different perspectives.”

Friends of the Farm Māngere Bridge aims to make Māngere Bridge a caring, connected, waste-wise community. Each month, the group is involved in a diverse range of activities.
