It was great to see locals cycling and walking to the Foreshore to take part in the recent Foreshore Cleanup, organized by Friends of the Farm.
A variety of rubbish was collected, including socks, shirts, bottles, cans, food wrappers, pizza boxes, and surprisingly, lots of lollipop sticks.
As the tide went out exposing the muddy and rocky foreshore, the birds returned. The seagulls enjoyed splashing in the shallow water while the kotuku waded around the mangroves, searching for tasty morsels.
Robyn from Friends of the Farm observed that there was less rubbish to collect from around the Foreshore than on a previous cleanup – “Hopefully this is because people are more aware of the environment and are making the effort to clean up after themselves”.
The volunteers were encouraged by very positive comments from people out enjoying the sunshine and scenery. “Thanks for doing this work, I’d love to help but my balance and joints wont let me!” and “Good on you!”
One of the locals said “it’s inspiring to see most of the group are youngsters, giving up a few hours on their Sunday afternoon to do something positive for the environment”.
