Preserves Workshop

Preserves Workshop

We are always looking for ways in which we can bring people together, with a common interest, to learn new skills, and how we can utilise the resources we have, as in knowledge and in this case feijoas.

Besides biting them open and slurping out the insides, there are only so many feijoas you can eat.  However they can be used in other ways.

Recently we got together to do a test run on feijoa chutney and feijoa icecream – something for the adults and something for the kids.

By doing this together we could see what would be needed to run a workshop with a larger group of people.  It was also a great chance to swap recipes and re use the jars we have all been collecting in our pantries.

The farm barn kitchen is nice and big, has two ovens, stove top elements and plenty of hot water to sterilise jars. We could set up tables to sit and chop fruit and measure ingredients, and chat and share knowledge.

The “joys of preserving” encompass the satisfaction of extending the shelf life of food, saving money, preventing waste, and enjoying the flavors of seasonal produce throughout the year, as well as the pleasure of sharing homemade preserves.  It ticks all the boxes for us!

For instance some of the measurable benefits are:

  • Extends Shelf Life:

Preserving methods like canning, freezing, drying, and pickling allow you to store food for longer periods, ensuring you can enjoy it even when it’s out of season.

  • Reduces Food Waste:

By preserving surplus produce, you can prevent it from spoiling and ending up in landfills, contributing to sustainability.

  • Cost Savings:

Preserving can be a budget-friendly way to enjoy fresh, high-quality ingredients year-round, as you can purchase produce in season when it’s most affordable.

  • Access to Seasonal Flavors:

Preserving allows you to savour the flavours of your favourite fruits, vegetables, and herbs even when they’re not in season.

  • Food Safety:

Certain preservation methods, like canning, help to ensure food safety by destroying harmful bacteria and extending shelf life.

  • Sharing with Loved Ones:

Preserving can be a wonderful way to share homemade treats and gifts with family and friends, fostering connection and joy.

  • Passing Down Traditions:

Preserving can be a way to carry on family traditions and recipes, connecting you to your heritage.

  • Personal Fulfillment:

The process of preserving can be a rewarding and creative activity, allowing you to connect with nature and the food you grow or purchase.

Considering all the above, we decided we had to go ahead and organise a Preserves Workshop at the Ambury Farm Barn.  Watch this space for date and time and reserve your spot!
