Tucked inside the door of the Māngere Bridge Library is a compact recycling hub that visitors use well.
Friends of the Farm (FoTF) started collecting blister packs a year ago to add to the batteries, razors and Colgate already being collected. Volunteer Debbie has sent in 8 boxes for recycling over this time. Each box holds approximately 5.5kg, which is more than 4000 blister packs per box.
Every month Debbie also collects approximately 250g of razors, 2 kg of Colgate oral health products and 15kg of batteries, which are all sent off for recycling. “It’s wonderful to see how invested locals are in recycling these items”, said Debbie. “Having this recycling setup in the Library makes it easy for people to access.
On the side of the recycling cabinet, we’ve listed places where you can recycle other items like polystyrene, soft plastics, tetra packs, vapes, and plastic plant pots. Click here for a PDF file of that list (current as of Sept 2024, 161Kb).
You can also see a comprehensive recycling directory online at https://www.beautification.org.nz/wastedirectory We appreciate the library staff’s support and help. We are all on this waste-wise journey together, and it’s heart-warming to work together on this.”
In our area, it’s not just Māngere Bridge Library that supports recycling. Mitre 10 Onehunga has a neat recycling hub at their front entrance, all clearly labelled and accessible. The Warehouse on Pah Road has a bin for soft plastics, as does Pak’nSave Royal Oak. There are also bins for metal bottle tops and plastic tops at Pak’nSave. These businesses make it easy to do your shopping and recycling!
So keep up the good work all you recycling locals!
