The Central Interceptor is New Zealand’s largest ever Wastewater Project. When completed in 2025 there will be a 14.7km long tunnel with a major pump station and 19 shafts and several link sewers collecting and transferring wastewater to the tunnel. It will run underground from Grey Lynn to Watercare’s Māngere Wastewater Treatment Plant. Once fully constructed the Central Interceptor tunnel will reduce the volume of wastewater overflowing into waterways and onto beaches by up to 80%.
The tunnel is New Zealand’s longest bored wastewater tunnel and will be high enough to fit a giraffe and wide enough to fit four rhino side by side. Digging 30 metres underground in a former seabed has unearthed some amazing fossils including a 3-4 million year old cockle.
