Bee Supermarket at Ambury Farm Park?!

Bee Supermarket at Ambury Farm Park?!

, ,

Our lovely local farm, Ambury Park was chosen by Woolworths as the best site for a pop-up supermarket for bees.  Throngs of people have been calling in to walk through the miniature supermarket and learn more about the important roles bees play in fresh food at supermarkets.

Bees pollinate 70 per cent of all crops consumed by humans and hence play a key role in food production.

Pesticides, climate change and habitat destruction are putting bee numbers in danger around the world.

The Bee Supermarket has aisles of bee-friendly blooms to celebrate the return of fresh seasonal produce like asparagus and strawberries.  It’s designed to be kid-friendly.  Kids can explore the aisles filled with the vibrant plants bees love, play a fact finding game and take home a bee themed goodie bag.  There is a separate section where kids can put on protective gear and get up close to a working beehive, provided by Bees Up Top.

Local Margaret visited with her grandchildren and commented “It’s a wonderful showcase of beautiful flowers that bees love and my grandchildren enjoyed the game of testing your knowledge.  We got most questions right!  The scent of the flowers is amazing and it’s all at a child friendly level.   There’s also good advice about what we can do to make our own gardens more bee friendly.
I’ve already got some of the plants bees love in my garden and this certainly encourages me to plant more.  We are going to make a bee watering station too – I see there are easy instructions online – it’s a good school holiday project.  And in the goodie bag we’ve got some sunflower seeds to plant – another holiday activity.
Thanks Woolies!”
