In the 1970s, concerned residents began meeting with the operators of the Māngere wastewater treatment plant to address the plant’s impact on the community and the harbour.
The Watercare Community Liaison Group now meets quarterly as a requirement of the company’s resource consent.
Recent updates
Midges
Midges (small flies) mostly appear from September to December. Midge traps are monitored weekly, and sludge in the outlet channel is disturbed to disrupt hatching larvae. Mature midges that settle in nearby trees are sprayed with growth inhibitor.
Odours
Four odour complaints were received over the past three months. Watercare asks the public to report odours, so it can stay on top of any issues. All reports are investigated. To make a report, please call 09 44 22 222, or visit www.watercare.co.nz/faults-outages/report-a-fault
Interceptor
Work is underway on the central interceptor tunnel, which will run from Grey Lynn to our Māngere plant.
This project is designed to better manage Auckland’s stormwater run-off and help make our waterways cleaner.
While the tunnel is being built, Watercare land along Greenwood Rd will be used temporarily to store the basalt rock that is extracted.
Once completed, the 14.7km tunnel will be the longest in New Zealand. At 4.5m in diameter, it will be high enough to fit a giraffe, and wide enough to fit four rhino side by side.
